A Notable Charlotte School of Law Success Story...

/ScamDean Hat On

It's been a difficult few years recently for the higher-calling of the Law School Mission Statement (tm).  Fewer students have been applying due to self-serving and pernicious lies propagated by disgruntled law graduates (with licenses) who clearly don't want to work very hard, to say nothing of certain LawProfs who have a penchant for biting the hands that feed them.  LSATs and bar passage rates have been declining while costs have increased, but that is not the fault of students - its the fault of unfair testing methods and always-rising prices.  What people don't need is criticism, but inspiring stories about how you too can be a Million-Dollar Graduate.  So here we go...

Cedar City Mayor Maile Wilson was just 26 when she filed paperwork to run for office in 2013. Her age didn’t seem to deter voters as she won the election with 56 percent of the vote. She took the seat at age 27, making her the youngest and only female mayor in the town’s history.

Ha ha, suck it, you diversity-demonizing nay-sayers and scambloggers!  Talk about "JD Advantage!"  If you can believe it, you can achieve it!  With all the reams and reams of Negative-Nellie talk about "experience" and "connections" and "financial backing" and what-not, it's refreshing to see someone with some moxie get out there and make it happen despite what the critics say!  See what a Charlotte SOL degree can do for you, right?  Let's read some more...

After interning with former First Lady Laura Bush, working on Mitt Romney’s presidential run in 2012 and graduating with a degree in law from the Charlotte School of Law in North Carolina, Wilson longed for the red rocks of Southern Utah.

"Cedar City is my home," Wilson said. "As soon as I finished law school, I knew I wanted to move back to Utah and be involved in some way."

Well, OK, not EVERYONE can do an internship with a First Lady or work on high-profile political campaigns, but that's missing the point.  Rather than scoffing at "connections," let's focus on what was really the heart of the issue - going back home to make a difference, with a JD in tow.  So, stop being jerks, you scambl...

Times are certainly different from those of Wilson’s grandfather, Loren Whetten, who also served as mayor in Cedar City from 1966-1973...[d]espite their success, Wilson [and others] are part of the select few Utah millennials who have found a place in politics.

Oh, OK, NOW you're going to start complaining.  So, it's not basking in the glow of Charlotte SOL, its the "nepotism," right, cynics?  Yeah, I see how you guys are.  So, are you trying to say that lots and lots of recent law graduates are not mayors of small-town America, running things better than their forebears?  How dare you tarnish someone else's achievements.  Maybe YOU should go run for office, Mr. Harvard-Yale-Stanford, and see how far YOU get, huh?  Or maybe you should have gone to Charlotte, instead...!

In any event, it's not what you start with, its what you do with it.  Instead of being mayor, maybe you would have to settle for, oh, I don't know, an AUSDA position, or director of a non-profit, or maybe just a humble solo practice if BigLaw doesn't quite do the trick.  Don't let the nay-sayers hold you back.  Just as in this example, thousands and thousands of grads can go on to do amazing things with their (Charlotte) JDs.

Or so they say.

No disrespect to Ms. Wilson, and we all certainly hope that she is doing well and making a difference.  We hold up Ms. Wilson, however, to say that there is always "more to the story" when considering one's future legal education and the "advantages" that certain JDs can potentially confer.  Oftentimes, it matters more what you bring with you prior to starting, than what you obtain while you are there - and the Law School Cartel will quietly brush this fact under the rug as if it doesn't matter.

Looks like she picked a bad time to go to law school and had to settle for Harlot. I suspect that if any subsequent graduate makes the news it will be for running his forklift into someone.

  2. If you are wealthy and connected...with all the time in the world to study at college and the ability to take whatever soft major you like...and the best law school you could get into was Charlotte Law...exactly how lousy a student are you?

    1. Not sure why someone from Utah would go to law school in Charlotte, N.C., unless there was some sort of personal connection to the area. If you're going to go into massive debt, you might as well do it somewhere fun. (Nothing against Charlotte, but it's not Miami or L.A.)

    2. One obvious reason for going to Charlotte is the inability to get in anywhere else.

  3. Big whooptie-doo! Plenty of lawyers slither into politics. Those who can't make it in the state legislatures go into local politics. Don't know what it pays now, but as of 2013, the mayor of Cedar City, UT was paid a whopping sum of $23,224.00 annually. http://www.utahsright.com/profile.php?id=2422466 Question is, is Ms. Wilson making it as a lawyer? Or does she have so much free time on her hands (due to not being employed) that she can virtually volunteer her time to be a small-town mayor?

    1. "in addition to her many duties as mayor, is working for the law firm of Jones Waldo in their southern Utah offices in Cedar City and St. George. "

J-W appears to be more or less "local big law" for the Cedar City area, about 75 or 80 lawyers in the firm.

  4. Bob Markley's father was an oil tycoon. He became a successful attorney and just somehow managed to get The Yardbirds, a major British rock quintet, to perform in his mansion. He later co-founded a rock group, The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, and somehow managed to sign to Reprise, Frank Sinatra's label. Don't look at what he started with...look at yourself and you, yes you, can be a rock star too!

  5. In small towns, family names are critical. If you are from the right family or a family that owns farm ground or have an extended family, you are golden. You belong to the right churches etc. Her success story proves what the scam blog movement has been saying all of these years. If you have connections it doesn't really matter where one attended law school or their class rank. You are somebody, somebody sent.

    1. It also helps in big cities. Or middle sized cities. Really, it helps everywhere.

Some say it's the only thing that matters, ever.

I don't have children, and I never will have any, unless I could guarantee their success and wealth into the future. None of this compete in a rigged game bullshit I went through.

    2. So, you decided to not to have children because you and I are "failures" aka earning decent coin or obtaining good employment practicing law. Great. 'Murica will be consigned to a bleak future of Donald Trumps, Rush Limbaughs', Bannions and their Opiate 70>IQ adherents. The Washington Post profiled a Trump supporter bus driver in Texas who earns $24K per year and blames her little immigrant child passengers and their struggling parents for her "troubles." She will be the only "one" left to vote if you have no kids.

    3. Hopefully, 8:29, the people earning "decent coin" will be able to rear children, provide for them well, give then good educations, etc. For a lot of people, attorney or not, there has become a decreasing number who can do so.

    4. Yes, because the Republicans and the corporate overlords hollowed out the middle class in the name of ever increasing profits. Reagan gutted SEC regulations designed to control monopolistic behavior and that "limited" competition. You now have private equity and hedge funds manipulating and borrowing against companies they "purchased" in the form of leveraged debt. The company gets saddled with debt that went to pay the Hedge Fund. Look at Sears, Kodak, Lancaster Glass and thousands of other companies that used to be house hold names. Loaded up with debt. Republicans now wonder why assistance, disability is surging...

    5. Old Guy is another of those nobodies with no connections or trust fund or fancy surname. And he certainly would not have children.

During a course on family law, I alluded approvingly to David Benatar's book Better Never to Have Been: The Harm of Coming into Existence. Benatar holds—correctly, in my view—that bringing children into the world is unethical.

    6. Old Guy, you are right on. To a lot of Republicans, LIFE ends 15 minutes after birth. School funding NO, Health Care NO, Mammmograms NO, PBS NO, Public Assitance NO, Unemployment NO, EPA NO, Consumer Protection NO. But to protect an Sperm or an Egg = LIFE LIFE LIFE YES BIBLE

  6. Kinda mean-spirited to target individual Charlotte grads, no? I wish her well; I wish everyone who has graduated from Charlotte well. That being said, I don't think Charlotte Law needs to exist.

  7. Scambloggers give power to law school by dwelling on it and making it an obsession. By talking about it all the time, power is given back to law school and the experiences that were supposed to be in the past. By thinking about the past and reliving it, you are bringing the past to the present. It's not healthy, and it makes you powerless.

    1. No, professor, what makes most JDs "powerless" is the $100k+ in non-dischargeable debt that prevents them from buying homes, starting families, or investing. It is a constant, monthly reminder that "brings the past to the present" against most people's will.

According to your logic, if the bridge is out, people should just ignore it rather than put up an orange sign that says "Danger! Bridge Out! Do not Cross!" It's the dumb driver's fault if they are tooling along at 40mph only to fall in because they are not expecting the bridge to be out. Who said I am my brother's keeper, anyway?

    2. Or continued unemployment and underemployment of attorneys. My buddies and I out of law school three decades are struggling Solos. I have a side job at a fueling station, another works at Target and another is getting a "grant" from a religious charity to obtain retraining in another field. There are 100s of applicants for every job....newbies and oldsters like me. The work nor clients are not there to support a middle class lifestyle.

  8. Refer to local news for Cedar City from 2015. The Cedar City annual salary for mayor was raised from $19,013 to $20,017. Per local news source, The Spectrum, part of the USA Today network.
