I've probably drank a bit more in my life than I should have too. If I have one, I'll have sixteen. Slide…

I'm a fortunate one; sheer chance it was. I would have just as easily been taken by the scam had luck not fallen into my lap. So it happens, even with my dismal GPA and 149 LSAT score, I sooooo much wanted to go to law school that I did. I was willing to pay for it by whatever means available, and just like most, that would have been by adding to the student loan bubble. Then suddenly, out of nowhere, came this little unsustainable Federal program called the Post 9-11 GI Bill to pick up my tab (and also provide quite a stipend). Still, I am keenly aware of the harm caused to so many by the ongoing law school scam.

On John. I have had only one interaction with him via a post to his site some time back. He had blogged about his asthma and the suffering it was causing him. Shortly before that, my son, just like me, had outgrown his childhood asthma. So upon reading John's post, I wrote to him, releasing my personal name and e-mail, and telling him that I had a nebulizer and unexpired albuterols, which was exactly what his post said he desperately needed. I told him I would send them to him free of charge and postage on me. No reply. The way I figure it now, if he doesn't care about his physical health, it is unlikely that he'll address his mental health.

Question on another topic… So, I received my "what are you doing 9-months after law school" questionnaire a few months ago and I checked that I am "unemployed and looking". Not technically true because I went to law school at night where the no-work requirement doesn't apply and I have the same job (about $95K) I had before I started. My rationale for choosing unemployed was because, from the law school's perspective, I am just that. If I indeed found a comparable legal job, I would have jumped. As the questionnaire is written, there's no right answer. Why should the law school benefit statistically for that which they had absolutely no influence over? Was I wrong?
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3660083024919144793.post-69482620926319332122013-04-11T10:56:07.772-06:002013-04-11T10:56:07.772-06:00Let us know how you are doing. Seriously, even for a T4 trash heap like Touro, I don't think its asking too much to expect it to reject applicants and fail 1L's who lack the aptitude to pass the bar. Even the numbnuts at the ABA expect this since a school will lose its accreditation if its bar passage rate gets low enough. One of the problems with the education bubble is that people who have no business being in college are now going there and getting degrees - when some of them are scarcely qualified even for moderately skilled labor.

I'm all for turning off the student loan money spigot in Washington (although a hemorrhage might be a better comparison), but be serious: are law schools supposed to REFUSE to accept the money? He was a victim in the sense that he never should have been admitted to law school - any law school, or at least should have been forced to drop out after 1L. But Touro wanted his loan dollars so it let him in and let him stay. Still, I bet Touro regrets this. He is one of Touro's most famous alumni - an not in a good way. I feel bad for painter and contempt for the people who constantly battle him on this and the old Inside the Law school scam.

On another story I was at a small restuarant last night and I overheard a couple of young guys. One was discussing his potential for getting married and the impact of this when entering his 1 L year of school. I immediately said to him don't go to LS and he laughed. They were talking privately so I left him alone, but when I was getting up to leave I had to give him more information. I gave him all the reasons not to go, and some of the reasons to attend. I then asked him if he had heard of the law school scam movement and he had never heard of it. I was blown away. The word on the pitfalls of Law School just has not touched everyone.
